RHODE ISLAND PET BIRD CLUB SHOW
November 26, 2005
By: Julie Mitchell
I convinced Wendy LaBanca to come to Virginia this year to exhibit at the PCBS show held in June. Shortly after
that, Wendy mentioned that her club was going to have a dual show on November 26th, Thanksgiving weekend and what
was I doing? Since most of my family is scattered all around, Thanksgiving is not too much of a family event and
since I'd never been to Rhode Island, we decided that we would plan to go.
We arrived early the day before the show, 7:00 a.m. to be exact. Anytime we drive North, we usually leave so that
we go through NY City in the wee hours of the morning. We got checked in and slept for several hours. Since this
was 'Black Friday', I had to keep up my time-honored tradition of going shopping so we found a mall and spent some
time warming up my plastic. We met everyone for dinner that night at a place called Chellos and they really have
"Chowda" on the menu.
Saturday morning was the usual pre-show chaos. We got the birds loaded into the van for the short trek to the show
hall. The show was held in a very nice atrium at the Renaissance hotel. The first show was judged by Josh Maple
and Pat Tucker apprenticed. There were 87 birds with 11 exhibitors, which was an excellent turn-out for a 'first'
show. There were some very nice Novice birds exhibited. Top Novice honors went to Wendy LaBanca with a very nice
Normal Cock. Pat explained why she placed the birds the way that she placed them and gave some hints to the Novice
Exhibitors on ways to improve. We immediately went into the Advanced Section and Josh went through each of the
Advanced birds and ended up with a very pretty Cinnamon Pearl Hen owned by Pat Tucker as Best In Show. We took a
lunch break and the stewards quickly prepared for the second show.
The second show was judged by Wendy Lomas and there were 86 birds and 12 exhibitors. Wendy went through the Novice
birds very diligently commenting on each one and offering suggestions. The Best Novice bird was a very nice Cinnamon
Cock owned by Nancy Johnson-Mello. After a very short break, Wendy moved into the Advanced Section working each bird. Her Best in Show pick was also a Pat Tucker bird, but it was a very nice Normal.
We hurriedly packed everything up to go back to the hotel so that the birds could settle in for the night. The rest
of us, met for dinner and enjoyed each other's company well into the morning, swapping tales and talking birds.
Unfortunately, as always, Sunday morning came far to early and it was back on the road for the 11 hour trip home.
This may have been Rhode Island Pet Bird Club's first show, but I'm sure it won't be the last!
